Training and Workforce Services
The State of Kansas dedicates resources for employers to train and retrain employees and provides significant employment assistance in delivering a skilled workforce. Our Workforce Services Division is located in our Department of Commerce; as a result, companies are receiving more value than ever from our workforce training programs and KANSASWORKS workforce services. Companies new to Kansas or Kansas businesses needing to expand or restructure may qualify for assistance under one of our workforce training programs. These flexible programs offer:

The Department of Commerce offers professional consultations and a variety of options at no cost to assist your workforce training and employment needs. Whether you are training a start-up workforce, adding new jobs or retraining current employees with new skills, Commerce has resources to help you.
The Department adds value to companies doing business in Kansas by providing more options than ever. We can help you recruit and screen employees with competencies required for success in your company. Our Workforce Services Division is developing a growing reservoir of business-relevant training expertise within educational institutions tailored to help your company achieve results.
The Department of Commerce collaborates with you to design a unique training plan to meet the specific skill sets you require of your employees. When appropriate, we can offer financial assistance to offset your firm’s training costs through the most appropriate Kansas training program. A profile of each of these programs, eligibility criteria and information concerning how to apply for assistance is provided in a summary table later in this section.

Kansas Industrial Training Program (KIT)

|Type of Training||Employee Training: Employees on the payroll receive instruction on the company's equipment in a classroom or on the work floor. Each program is customized to match your company's specific need.|
| Who is Eligible||Basic Industries* creating at least one new job paying an average wage that meets the median wage for the county in which the project is located (excluding recalled workers, replacement workers or formerly existing jobs).|
| Covered Expenses||We pay negotiated costs for instructors' salaries; training manuals and textbooks; supplies and materials; minor equipment; certain utility costs and curriculum planning and development.|
| Instructor Selection||Instructors may come from your supervisory staff, community colleges, technical schools, consultants, vendors, etc. If desired, we can assist in locating qualified instructors. |

Kansas Industrial Retraining Program (KIR)

Minimum training requirement of one existing employee. The average wage must meet the median wage for the county in which the project is located.|

STATE TRAINING INSTITUTIONS
Kansas’ public training institutions have developed strong partnerships with businesses throughout the state. We can offer your business hundreds of existing training programs or design one to meet your needs through 26 technical and community colleges and seven universities. Many companies have taken advantage of these valuable resources for standardized or customized workforce training.
Community and technical colleges serve business and industry directly through short-term programs for adults seeking competency-based instruction in order to meet the skill requirements of your company.
Institutions also provide occupational technical training for secondary, postsecondary and adult participants. One-third of community college students are enrolled in technical programs.
By partnering with a postsecondary training institution to combine classroom and on-the-job training, your employees are able to receive credentials in nationally recognized Registered Apprenticeship programs. Registered Apprenticeship is a proven method for improving skills, knowledge, worker quality and employee retention. Seventy-five percent of Registered Apprenticeship sponsoring employers in Kansas are non-union employers. USDOL grant funding is currently available for Related Technical Instruction provided to dislocated workers hired in specific areas of the state.
State universities play a key role in Kansas’ economic development strategy, particularly in the crucial areas of research and continuing education. Our seven state universities award approximately 15,000 bachelors, 5,000 masters and 1,200 doctoral degrees each year.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
A wide variety of services are available through the Kansas Workforce Centers located throughout the state. Services can include: statewide and national jobs listings; applicant pre-screening and application acceptance; space to conduct interviews as well as staff to assist in scheduling; space for job fairs; applicant assessment services and testing; Veteran services; and current labor market information. These services are available to all Kansas employers at no cost and may be accessed through www.kansasworks.com or by contacting your local Kansas Workforce Center.
